Many sellers are familiar with BANT & MEDDICC. Both of these are used for qualification and effective selling.
What else is in common with these two frameworks?
They are more inward-facing to help your company rather than your customers. Luckily there is another framework that can help you better achieve this. It’s a framework to help you diagnose your customer's pain and how to solve it.
The framework is called SPICED and was created by Winning by Design.
Let’s dig into each one.
Situation is the background, facts, circumstances, or happenings that have led to the customer’s current state. What led the customer to get here? What happened rapidly, or perhaps gradually, and compounded over time? Typically, this is what leads to ‘Pain’. Something must’ve happened to change the current state to an undesirable one. Digging into how they got here will help you help them solve the problem.
Pain is the challenge that the customer is facing. There are 3 types of pain for a business; financial, operational, and people-related. Knowing this will help direct you on your discovery path. A key question here is to ask about the business impact. How are the challenges preventing the company from going faster, saving money, increasing revenue, or reducing risk?
Impact is what you need to articulate what will happen when the customer adopts your solution. What’s in it for them, and what’s in it for the business? This is all part of the vision transfer from you to them. Paint the picture of what the before and after situation will be.
Critical Event is your compelling event. Why must the customer make a change now and what is the benefit of doing it by that certain date? It’s hard to motivate someone to move quicker if there’s no consequence of moving slowly, or doing nothing at all.
The Decision relates to how the customer will make their decision and what their criteria are. This is critical to understand in the discover process otherwise you won’t know what to focus on.
Finally, here is a nice visual that shows the framework in action and how discover builds on itself.
